UN, November 8th. /tass/. A lecture on the work of the great Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was held on Thursday at the UN headquarters in New York. The lesson, organized by the Russian Permanent Mission to the world Organization, was conducted by Denis Von Meck, a descendant of Tchaikovsky.

The event, which lasted about an hour, was attended by several dozen people. The topic of the lecture was the journey of the Russian composer to the USA at the end of the XIX century. During the lesson, Von Meck showed rare photographs, as well as excerpts from recordings describing the composer’s impressions of the trip.

Denis von Meck told about Carnegie Hall grand opening and a 5-day festival in 1891

A descendant of the composer recalled that it was Tchaikovsky’s concert in the center of New York that opened the Carnegie Hall concert Hall on May 5, 1891. The composer himself conducted the orchestra at the opening. In addition, Von Meck pointed out that Tchaikovsky’s music was enthusiastically received by the American public and received many positive reviews. “He was very surprised that some of his works were much more famous here [in the USA] than in Europe and even in Russia,” he pointed out.

During a trip to the United States in 1891, a descendant of the composer said, Tchaikovsky, in addition to New York, also visited Washington, Philadelphia and Baltimore.

In an interview with a TASS correspondent, Von Meck said that he recently visited Carnegie Hall and talked with the staff of the concert venue. “I am very glad that they are so sensitive to the memories of the opening, when the best, most famous composer and conductor at that time was chosen — it turned out to be Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky <…>. Tchaikovsky took away from this trip an amazing understanding of how much he is loved and known in America,” said a descendant of the composer.
